I was talking with my friend (a former senior officer in the Navy) the other day and I asked the magic question: Romney or McCain? His reply was McCain because of his military service, but it was a close 55/45 split with Romney.
As we talked he expounded on military leadership and how it is ingrained into your soul, regardless of how long ago it may have been. Since I have never served in the military, this was insightful and I have tried to add this information to my assessment of McCain.
Obviously my friends biggest concerns are international affairs and strong national defense. As an open Mitt supporter with strong dislike for McCain, I tried to find issues that would swing his vote to Romney in the upcoming Texas primary. I hit on one item that opened our discussion further: Guantanamo Bay
McCain wants to close Gitmo and bring prisoners to the US. This move would put all enemy combatants into our legal system with accompanying legal protections. This may not be my top issue with McCain, but it should be unsettling to many, many voters.
